What is EDP Billabong Pro Ericeira?
The EDP Billabong Pro Ericeira is an important event of the World Men’s Qualifying Series (QS 10,000), which takes place at Ribeira d’Ilhas Beach, in Ericeira, near Lisbon.
World Qualifying Series (WQS)
The World Men’s Qualifying Series (WQS) is organized by the World Surf League (WSL). The Circuit clears the top 10 surfers of the year for the World Championship Tour (WCT).
In addition to the EDP Billabong Pro Ericeira, there are 6 more annual events with a maximum of 10,000 points (QS 10,000). Because these 7 events are very important for this qualification, they are attended by the best surfers in the world and attract many surf fans and media from all over the world.
Ribeira d’Ilhas Beach (in Ericeira)
Ribeira d’Ilhas Beach is just 2.5 miles (4 km) from Ericeira. This beach is famous for its “right”, one of the classic high performance waves. Thus, it has a very long wave, which allows different types of approach.
The beach is set amidst a beautiful natural amphitheater. Shell-shaped and sheltered from the wind, you feel that pleasant warmth. During surf races and in a relaxed, youthful atmosphere, fans are expected to look out to sea and follow the performance of surfers.
The beach has good support facilities, with eating places, surf shops, surf school, toilets, etc. In addition, by the beach support facilities there is a large car park.
However, if you climb the steep staircase to the viewpoint, you have upstairs a great panoramic view of the beach, the cliffs and the sea. Even more, along the way you have great places to shoot.
Ericeira: World Surfing Reserve
Ericeira is the first World Surfing Reserve in Europe and the second in the world since 2011. The World Surfing Reserve in Ericeira has about 2.5 miles (4 km) of sea coast, of enormous environmental richness and great biodiversity. As such, the beaches have waves of varying difficulty for more and less experienced surfers and are as follows: São Lourenço, Coxos, Crazy Left, Cave, Ribeira d’Ilhas, Reef and Pedra Branca.
World Surfing Reserves is an international Save the Waves Coalition awareness project that promotes the value of waves. In this sense, this aims to protect and preserve the privileged areas for surfing, promoting environmental, cultural and economic aspects.
What happens in 2019 at EDP Billabong Pro Ericeira? (Program)
The EDP Billabong Pro Ericeira 2019 edition concludes the World Surf League events in Europe and precedes the famous event in Hawaii. In the Portuguese event will be 16 top surfers, such as Brazilians Italo Ferreira (No. 5 worldwide), Miguel Pupo and Lucas Silveira, Australians Ryan Callina (who won the 2018 edition), Cooper Chapman and Jacob Willcox, French Joan Duru and Charly Quivront, American Ian Crane and Hawaiian Joshua Moniz.
The event also has the Portuguese Frederico Morais, Vasco Ribeiro, Pedro Henrique, Tomás Fernandes, Henrique Pyrrait. These last two received wildcards.
In addition, the 2019 edition contributes to qualify for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, where surfing will debut as an Olympic sport.

What happened in 2018 at EDP Billabong Pro Ericeira?
The 2018 edition of EDP Billabong Pro Ericeira was followed by thousands of fans of this sport. Of the professional surfers who were in the 2018 race, we highlight:
- Australian Ryan Callina, defending champion who won the 2018 edition;
- Portuguese Frederico Morais (“Kikas”) who was in 9th position.
What to do near the event in Ericeira?
Ericeira is a great place for strolling by the sea, enjoying the boats of the fishermen or walk about in the narrow streets of the village.
You can also visit the World Surfing Reserve Interpretation Center next to the Tourist Office.

Visit a World Heritage site by UNESCO in mafra
Classified World Heritage site by UNESCO, in 2019, Mafra National Palace is the most important building of Baroque architecture in Portugal and includes a Royal Palace, a Basilica and a Convent.
It has 1200 rooms (bedrooms, living rooms, etc.) and an impressive Library, which is one of the most important in Europe.
The 6 organs together with the 2 chimes with 98 bells create a unique musical ensemble in the world.

Where to Eat in Ericeira? (Restaurants)
In the Ericeira area you can taste delicious local cuisine in various locations, especially fresh fish and seafood. We suggest a restaurant near the event.
Restaurante estrela do mar
The Restaurante Estrela do Mar is a popular seafood restaurant. It has a pleasant atmosphere, with neat decoration and comfortable chairs. Sitting at a table by the window, you can have a sea view. The service is efficient and friendly. Parking is next to the restaurant or in the park in front.
There are several dishes of fresh seafood. One more economical and delicious is the “Sopa Rica do Mar (Rich Sea Soup). For two people just order half a soup. It is a clam chowder (shrimp, cockles, mussels and others) with pieces of fried bread and coriander. Rich and delicate flavor to fresh seafood, with a slightly gelatinous consistency. For dessert, among many options, you have an excellent biscuit cake!
